Oh 8 Interview

Many thanks to Melita over at Oh 8 for this recent interview... it is a pleasure to be given the opportunity. "The premise of Oh 8 is simple: it's here to share the stories of Perth's people, inspire some thought, start a conversation and find out what it means to be 'creative'." Don't be shy & head on over to Oh 8 for some fresh inspiration & make sure to read about Machéll Styling - a good friend & an incredible stylist.

Holstee Collaboration

More than likely - you have seen &/or read the Holstee manifesto & in extension - you have been inspired.

I know this is true for myself & so when the opportunity presented itself to collaborate there was no doubt in my mind to say yes. What unfolded was the opportunity to create four custom illustrated letterpress cards available for purchase through Holstee

The Ups & Downs

Creating art is not always a joyful experience. Rewarding - yes, but not always joyful.

The ups & downs of creating a single illustration can often flow as frequently as waves rolling onto the sand on a stormy afternoon. With one movement of the pencil I can feel a sense of incredible inspiration & with the next feel like the inspiration has done the dash. It sounds fickle but I surprise myself in how often this happens.

I often have to remind myself that the process is worth the ups & downs because what I learn through it all is perseverance. This is often the cornerstone in which beautiful art is created & a truth that I have learnt the hard way more often than not. I need to remind myself that its not always about the final piece of art, but rather how my imagination has grown & in turn how that may shape my future ability to create.

It is in doing nothing that I find the greatest thief of creativity.

All that being said - I thought you may enjoy the beginning stages of my current hand lettering process...

What Is Inspiration?

Walking down the road towards the beach this morning I was captivated by the beauty of the ocean. For those of you who know me well - don't worry - I won't go into one of my 'how much I love the ocean' speeches, but I must say it was very inspiring to say the least.

I often talk about inspiration & the gift it is when arriving in the most unexpected ways, but today I want to share briefly about creating an environment that welcomes inspiration. It is easy to fill our days with the 'to do' list where by our Saturdays can simply become post-Fridays & our Sundays become pre-Mondays. We are swallowed up in our own anxiety & fail to enjoy the present & in turn leave inspiration at the kerb to blown away by the winds of stress.

You might not find the ocean overly inspiring & that's OK, but rather then defining what isn't inspiring - ask yourself - what is? What causes you to feel alive? How can you introduce that into your day to day schedule? How can we all make room for the very thing that gives us context & the motivation to live with passion?

Perhaps you don't have any inspiration & my encouragement to you is to rediscover time. Time is the most precious currency & it is the very thing required for you to actually explore inspiration. Don't get caught up in removing the noise of life completely, but rather see what you can discover in the chaos. Give yourself five, ten, fifteen minutes in the morning, at lunch, after dinner & begin to explore. Allow yourself the freedom to remove the unnecessary tasks from your mind for tomorrow will have it's own worries & ask the question - what inspires me?

Now begins the adventure!

Levi Weaver Collaboration

I was recently contacted by Magnolia Red from Texas about collaborating with one of their represented musicians - Levi Weaver & translating his lyrics to a limited edition, hand lettered poster for his current album pledge launch. Evidence below shows that I said yes & it is my pleasure to share the results with you today.

A few words from the man himself...

"So as I launch this campaign this week, just know – I really hate selling things. In fact, I refuse to “sell” you anything. But I am legitimately excited about the art I’m about to release, and you have all been such a big part of this whole story, whether by hosting shows in your house, posting my videos on your facebook wall, or just telling your friends about a song that meant something to you. That means the world to me, and I want to keep that relationship going. So if you want to be involved, I will be humbled and excited to have you on board."

- Levi Weaver

Back to my words... Levi is a brilliant musician that is worthy of support - so dont be shy & follow this link to make a pledge!
